Baycol drug
A majority of the reported fatal cases involve a high dosage of baycol in elderly patients, particularly when baycol is used in combination with a lipid lowering drug called gemfibrozil lopid and its generic.

The figures represented in this illustration represent the nominal growth of the pharmaceutical markets in the Nordic countries over the previous year, measured in pharmacy purchase prices PPP ; . The growth rate in Norway has been lower than in our neighbouring countries over the later years. Price cuts were introduced in Finland during 2006, resulting in a market decline 6.8 percent growth in 2005 and -0.4 percent.

The potential influence of inheritance on the effect of a drug set the stage for subsequent studies of genetic variation in other pathways of drug biotransformation. To fully appreciate the promise of pharmacogenomics, consider again the drug Baycol, which caused rhabdomyolysis. The withdrawal of Baycol from the market illustrates one of the most confounding aspects of drug discovery and testing, and that is the knowledge that as little as a third of patients derive the intended therapeutic benefit of a drug, either because most patients will suffer such severe side effects from the drug such that they will be unable to continue taking it, or the medication will be simply ineffective. This fact seriously complicates both the science and the business of pharmaceuticals. Many people took drugs like Baycol and Rezulin and were helped by them, but others died. The complexities of identifying a drug's pharmacological, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological properties--and eliminating any deficiencies that cause harm--brings a host of scientific challenges to finding safe, effective medicines for the general public. From a business standpoint, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the development of a drug, only to have to withdraw it from the market due to absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, and toxicity ADMET ; complications, has enormous impact on a pharmaceutical company's profitability. This must be weighed however against the current judicial system that recognizes the animal model as valid. It must also be weighed against the fact that even though some drugs are recalled they may still make the company billions of dollars. ; The list of drugs whose ADMET deficiencies failed to come to light in preclinical animal ; and clinical human ; studies, and which subsequently caused harm, and even death, once introduced into the market, is a long one. It is also a costly one, both in terms of human life and health as well as the financial health of some of the nation's and the world's ; largest companies. Refinements and improvements in ADMET technologies that are eliminating reliance on the expensive, time-consuming, and highly flawed animal model, can go a long way in addressing some of these issues. Still, we are left with the fact that some drugs are very effective and safe in certain individuals but kill or seriously harm others. These deficiencies will certainly not come to light in animal tests due to their lack of predictive value, and we have seen that they are often not revealed in clinical trials. Is there any way around this dilemma? The answer is yes. And it is light years away from dosing an animal with a chemical and hoping for the best, and then dosing a human based on what is perceived to be favorable animal data. Drug discovery used to go from animal models and animal testing to humans. Today we have the capacity to test human tissues, find gene signatures, use high throughput screening for efficacy and toxicity and then test humans with the appropriate genotype and celebrex.

I feel, that if conventional medicine fails and the patient is sent home to die, they should be allowed to seek out any method of treatment as long as it is not dangerous.

These kinds of bacteria are called friendly bacteria. This helps recycle cholesterol to make hormones.
